Brexit: Question Time audience member tells minister 'we voted Leave to take back control'

'Get real' audience member tells minister about Brexit vote

Tory minister accused of 'talking down' to Question Time audience

A BBC Question Time audience member has told a Tory minister "we voted Leave to take back control" after he accused her of not understanding the Brexit vote.

During Thursday night's show, broadcast from Chester, audience member Julie, from Wrexham, asked Jeremy Hunt: "You said the country was not ready for a no-deal Brexit but Theresa May requested an extension until the end of June. Was she wrong to request that extension, and what happens now?"

Hunt replied: "I think Theresa May was right to ask for that extension, because it is important to try and find a deal that works for the whole of the UK.

"I think what it's very important to remember is that the British people voted to leave the European Union. They didn't vote to leave without a deal. They didn't vote to leave without a plan. They voted to leave with a deal and that's why the Prime Minister has been working incredibly hard to try and get a deal that works for the whole of the UK."

But Julie interrupted him, saying: "It's about taking back control. That's why we voted Leave."

Hunt replied: "I understand that, but we voted to leave with a deal."

Julie then accused Hunt of "talking down" to her, saying: "I think you're talking down to us. You keep saying 'we voted to leave with a deal'. We voted to leave."

The audience applauded Julie's comments. Hunt then tried to explain his position, but Julie interrupted him again, saying: "We voted Leave to take back control."

Hunt replied: "I understand that, but we voted to leave with a deal. That's what the Prime Minister is trying to do."

The audience continued to applaud Julie's comments. Hunt then said: "I understand that people are frustrated, but it's important to remember that the Prime Minister is working incredibly hard to try and get a deal that works for the whole of the UK."
