Monaco Grand Prix: Leclerc Wins After First-Lap Crash

Three-Car Collision Brings Out Red Flag

By Nate Saunders, General Editor

Monaco, May 29, 2022 – The Monaco Grand Prix was stopped after barely half a lap due to a huge crash involving Sergio Perez and the two Haas cars. The incident brought out a red flag, halting the race and bringing the safety car onto the track.

The crash occurred at the start of the race, as the cars were approaching the first corner. Perez, who had started in second place, was running alongside Charles Leclerc's Ferrari when he made contact with the Haas of Mick Schumacher. The impact sent Perez's car spinning into the wall, and it was then collected by the second Haas, driven by Nikita Mazepin.

All three drivers were uninjured in the crash, but their cars were damaged beyond repair. The safety car remained on track for several laps while the wreckage was cleared. The race eventually resumed, with Leclerc taking the lead from pole position.

Leclerc went on to win the race, ahead of Carlos Sainz Jr. in second and Max Verstappen in third. It was Leclerc's first win of the season, and it moved him into the lead of the drivers' championship standings.
